BLACK THEATRE: THE REALITY OF A SLEEPLESS DREAM

TEATRO NEGRO: A REALIDADE DE UM SONHO SEM SONO

Christine Douxami

Résumé

The denomination of black theater can be applied to a theater that has the presence of black actors, or that characterized by the participation of a black director, or even of a black production. Another possible definition would be based on the theme treated in the plays. Taking into account the overlapping of these various definitions is that we will problematize the visions that have as reference what is black theater in Brazil. In this article, we seek to reveal to the general public the existence, from the 1940s until today, of numerous black theater groups in Brazil. Through ethnographic work in the cities of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Salvador, we rescue the different experiences of this artistic-militant act. We limit ourselves to professional theater, considering that the experiences of amateur theater are generally more dogmatic and with less repercussion in the audience. Our ethnographic journey has basically resorted to our interviews with the pioneers and current performers of black theater. Our goal is not to perform an anthropological or sociological analysis, this being another step in our doctoral research work, but to reveal innovative elements discovered in our field work.
