Defining UNESCO's scientific culture: 1945-1965

Résumé

When World War II was approaching towards its end, the Allied Countries redefined the international relations, among which scientific co-operation. Their aim was to take into account the new function (and power) of science after Hiroshima and to include scientific co-operation into a general frame of pacified international relations. The left-sided scientists of the 1930s were the main promoters for a global refounding of international scientific co-operation, through he Natural Sciences Department created in 1946 within UNESCO, by Julian Huxley and Joseph Needham.
The following text is the introduction of the 1st part, and presents the aims and the main activities of the Science Section in 1945-1965
