Pierre Auger and the Founding of CERN

Résumé

From the international scientific laboratories proposed, CERN (European Nuclear Organisation) was the only one that has been rapidly realized in the mid-1950s, and in conformity with the initial aim. Among the reasons for the success: the proposal came from the USA (June 1950); The physicist community agreed with the proposal; Auger, who succeeded to Needham as the head of UNESCO science division was in the heart of the political and institutional networks which were essential to realize such a project.
The following text is the section (1st part of the book) dedicated to the establishment of CERN and to Auger's role.
