Styles in Mathematical Practice
Résumé
This chapter presents a category of « mathematical style » drawing inspiration from a paper by the mathematician Claude Chevalley which was published in 1935 in the Revue de Métaphysique et de Morale. Comparisons are made with other notions of “style of scientific thinking”, such as that developed by Ian Hacking. Particular emphasis is put on “ways of writing” as opposed to other traditional ways of characterizing “styles” in terms of “reasoning,” “concepts,” “theories,” or “culture.”
