Humans and Tools

L'Homme et l'outil

Résumé

In this book, I try to understand the process of prehistoric technological invention, innovation, and diffusion. This attempt is supplemented by contributions from other disciplines, particularly the history and anthropology of technology, but also cognitive sciences. The first chapter describes the major prehistoric technological stages. The second chapter is devoted to the processes of invention and elaborates previous discussions on this subject which appeared in For an Archaeology of Body Movements (2000) dealing with my research on ground stone tools. In that book, I hypothesize that the net-like framework of technological changes is one example of an evolutionary framework that is much more general and is tied to the process of analogical thinking and to exaptations. The third chapter sketches the major thoughts on the "vertical" (from generation to generation) and "horizontal" (between neighboring groups) transmission of technological skills. This book also develops ideas on the cognitive abilities and technologies of nonhuman primates.
