On the Resilience Analysis of Interconnected Systems By a Set-Theoretic Approach

Abstract : The paper deals with the resilience analysis of critical infrastructure systems. An infrastructure sys-tem is a network of subsystems, which inter-operate through dependencies of various types. The interac-tion and dependency among the subsystems make the entire infrastructure system more complex and possibly vulnerable. We interpret resilience as a sys-tem property related to the prevention of, robustness to and recovery from undesired disturbances and events. Such resilience property of interconnected systems depends also on their structure and design parameters. In this paper, we abstract the structure of the sys-tem by a directed graph. A state dynamics is associ-ated to each of the subsystems, with interdependent terms that can represent different types of interde-pendencies. The system response to undesired dis-turbances and events could, then, be analyzed using notions from set theory, to identify regions of opera-tion and recoverable or non-recoverable conditions. Moreover, a characterization of the system resilience as a function of the design parameters can be pro-vided, which is useful for resilient design and opera-tion purposes. The benefits of the proposed approach are highlighted through an illustrative, numerical application.
