The articulation between the legal and technical means of erasure of data online, from the perspective of the user

Abstract : Following the rise of the Web 2.0 and the information society, the demands for a right to erase our data online are increasing. Due to the technical nature of the internet, such a right requires the use of not just legal means but also appropriate technical means. This article examines the articulation between the legal and technical means of erasure in regards to the possible actions of the user as well as in regards to the implementation of an erasure by data controllers. The article sheds light on the need for a unified approach of law and technology, but also on the inherent limitations of both domains that ought to be taken into consideration when moulding the future solutions for the protection of the individual and his data on the internet.
