Huma-Num (HN) is a national French research infrastructure dedicated to data from the humanities and social sciences (SHS). Officially recognised as a "Star Research Infrastructure" (IR*) by the Ministry of Higher Education and Research, it is operated jointly by the CNRS in collaboration with Campus Condorcet and Aix-Marseille University.
The genesis of Huma-Num lies in the realisation that the data generated by research in the social and human sciences, and developed and used by researchers, is particularly costly to produce and often inaccessible due to the lack of a suitable technical infrastructure for disseminating and promoting scientific knowledge. Huma-Num's primary objective is to respond to this technical need, while integrating this mission into the practices of the professionals involved in producing these data.
In France, between 2005 and 2010, a considerable effort was made to support electronic publishing, followed by open archives and, finally, the overall dissemination of scientific research results. However, the data essential to the research of academic researchers, such as primary and secondary source corpora, digitised archives and research library and laboratory collections, were largely neglected by existing infrastructures. Huma-Num has therefore set out to fill this technical gap.
Since 2013, the Huma-Num infrastructure has been supporting the digital transition of SHS research in two distinct ways. On the one hand, it is working to raise awareness among research communities of the challenges of data interoperability and the processes required for sharing by supporting (financially and technically) scientific networks (the 'HN Consortiums') and promoting the adoption of shared technical and scientific standards. It also provides the digital services needed to preserve and explore the data collected by researchers.
Huma-Num therefore attaches particular importance to research communities, recognising the scientific network as a structuring element of the French digital humanities and the projects that stem from it and/or are associated with it. The 'Consortiums-HN' are thus the human side of the Huma-Num research infrastructure, and it is this component that we propose to present in this poster. After more than ten years in existence, the way in which they operate, their integration into the Huma-Num socio-technical ecosystem, their missions and their positioning in the national and international landscape have all undergone significant changes, which this poster will attempt to summarise.
The poster will: 1) detail the missions, objectives and functioning of the Huma-Num Consortiums mechanism, 2) explain its place within the Huma-Num IR* and in the national and international human and social sciences landscape under the umbrella of open science, and 3) highlight the impact of funding from this mechanism on the human and social sciences communities over time, and the evolution of the diversity of the productions and deliverables of the Huma-Num Consortiums. This last aspect will highlight their openness to multidisciplinarity, their capacity for innovation, and their polymorphous nature, including the representation of the different professions and institutions involved.
Huma-Num (HN) est une infrastructure de recherche française d’envergure nationale dédiée aux données issues des sciences humaines et sociales (SHS). Officiellement reconnue comme une « Infrastructure de Recherche étoile » (IR*) par le Ministère de l’Enseignement Supérieur et de la Recherche, elle est opérée conjointement par le CNRS en collaboration avec le Campus Condorcet et Aix-Marseille Université.
La genèse de Huma-Num trouve son origine dans le constat que les données issues de la recherche en SHS, élaborées et exploitées par les chercheur·e·s, sont particulièrement coûteuses à produire et souvent inaccessibles, faute d’une infrastructure technique adaptée permettant leur diffusion et la valorisation du savoir scientifique. L’objectif premier de Huma-Num est ainsi de répondre à ce besoin technique tout en intégrant cette mission au sein des pratiques des professionnels œuvrant dans la production de ces données.
En France, entre 2005 et 2010, un effort considérable avait été déployé pour soutenir l’édition électronique, puis les archives ouvertes, et enfin, de manière globale, la diffusion des résultats de la recherche scientifique. Cependant, les données essentielles aux recherches des enseignants-chercheurs, telles que les corpus de sources primaires et secondaires, les archives numérisées, ainsi que les collections des bibliothèques de recherche et des laboratoires, étaient largement négligées par les infrastructures existantes. Huma-Num s’est donc efforcé de combler cette lacune technique.
Depuis 2013, l’infrastructure Huma-Num accompagne la transition numérique de la recherche en SHS de deux manières distinctes. D’une part, elle œuvre à sensibiliser les communautés de recherche aux défis de l’interopérabilité des données et des processus nécessaires au partage en soutenant (financièrement et techniquement) les réseaux scientifiques (les « Consortiums-HN ») et en promouvant l’adoption des normes techniques et scientifiques partagées. D’autre part, elle fournit les services numériques indispensables à la conservation et l’exploration des données collectées par les chercheur.e.s.
Huma-Num accorde donc une importance particulière aux communautés de recherche, reconnaissant le réseau scientifique comme un élément structurant des humanités numériques françaises et des projets qui en découlent et/ou s’y agrègent. Les « Consortiums-HN » sont ainsi le versant humain de l’infrastructure de recherche Huma-Num et c’est cette composante que nous proposons de présenter dans ce poster. Après plus de dix ans d’existence, leurs modalités de fonctionnement, leur intégration dans l’écosystème sociotechnique d’Huma-Num, ainsi que leurs missions et leur positionnement dans le paysage national et international, ont connu une évolution significative que ce poster s’efforcera de résumer.
Le poster : 1) détaillera les missions, les objectifs et le fonctionnement du dispositif des Consortiums-HN, 2) expliquera la place de ce dernier au sein de l’IR* Huma-Num et dans le paysage national et international des sciences humaine et sociales sous l’ombrelle de la science ouverte et 3) mettra en lumière l’impact du financement de ce mécanisme sur les communautés en sciences humaines et sociales au fil du temps, et de l’évolution de la diversité des productions et des livrables des Consortiums-HN. Ce dernier aspect permettra de souligner leur ouverture à la pluridisciplinarité, leur capacité d’innovation, et leur caractère polymorphe, incluant la représentation des différents métiers et institutions impliqués.
