The effect of autonomy transparency in human-robot interactions : a preliminary study on operator cognitive workload and situation awareness in multiple heterogeneous UAV management

Résumé

The autonomy capabilities in collaborative robotic systems are growing rapidly, and without appropri- ate feedback, the effectiveness of the future multi- robot management paradigm will be significantly limited by the human agent's cognitive abilities with the operator's Cognitive Workload (CW) and Situation Awareness (SA) will extend dispropor- tionately. This proposes a challenge to evaluate the impact of a robot's autonomous capability feedback - allowing the human agent greater transparency into the robot's autonomous status - in a supervi- sory role. This paper presents the motivation, aim, related works, experiment theory and methodology, the results and discussions, and the future work suc- ceeding this preliminary study. The results this pa- per illustrated that with a greater transparency of an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle's (UAV's) autonomous capability, an overall improvement in the subject's cognitive abilities was evident, that is, with a con- fidence of 95%, the test subjects' mean CW were demonstrated to have a statistically significant re- duction, while their mean SA were demonstrated to have a significant increase.
